Universal Wheelchair

Universal Wheelchair was my graduation project completed while studying Industrial Design in Japan. The project explored how industrial design could improve independence and dignity for people with limited mobility by rethinking the wheelchair as a multifunctional mobility system rather than a single-purpose device.

The concept combines personal transportation with assisted standing, bed transfer, and temporary resting functions, reducing reliance on caregivers while encouraging greater freedom in everyday life. Developed in 2008, the project focused on creating a future-oriented product that balanced accessibility, functionality, and an optimistic vision for inclusive design.

The project progressed through extensive concept development, ergonomic studies, CAD modeling, mechanism exploration, and physical prototyping, culminating in a detailed 1:3 scale presentation model. It was an opportunity to explore complex mechanical systems while considering the emotional and practical needs of users with limited mobility.

Beyond the final concept, the project reinforced the importance of designing for human dignity, independence, and real-world usability—principles that continue to influence my design approach today.

This project marked an important milestone in my development as a designer. It challenged me to balance ambitious engineering concepts with empathy, ergonomics, and user-centered thinking, while demonstrating the value of an iterative design process from early sketches to a refined physical prototype.
